Can you solve this antiques mystery?

Once again, I am asking all sharp-eyed readers to help solve an antiques mystery. Since we started offering these occasional puzzles, more than 2,000 of you have weighed in with answers or comments.

Sue Laurie, formerly of San Jose and now a resident of Paradise, sent me a photo of this family heirloom. It’s primarily constructed of wood and measures about 3½ inches long and two inches wide. The piece is finely detailed with gold-colored floral decoration and has ivory or bone “tabs,” some inlaid with mother-of-pearl.
